Lanfear Hill, Terrace BC

Lanfear Drive runs from the north end of Kenney St
up Lanfear Hill to McConnell Ave

1923 the newspaper reported Lanfear Hill was icy
and an accident occurred with horses, sleigh and logs,
heading to Little's mill.
So the name of this hill was established very early on.

Lanfear Drive and Lanfear Hill
Named after a Mother and her daughter,
That immigrated from England, in early 1915, to Terrace.

Mrs. Danina Lanfear, nee Hood,
and her daughter, Miss Margaret Emily Lanfear

Travelling with them to Terrace, and living with them,
 a Miss Ethelwyn "Ethel" French.

They came from England on the CPR ship, SS Virginian,
arriving in Canada Oct 31, 1914, at Quebec City.
They left Liverpool England Oct 22, 1914
They were shown heading to Edmonton AB
Danina Lanfear shown as married,
so she had left her husband obviously prior to this.

They called their farm the "Hillcrest Farm"
also known as the "Hill Farm"
They raised and sold Fruit and Vegetables.

Today part of their farm is located at 3725 Thomas St. Terrace,
Top of Lanfear Hill, on left side, corner of McConnell Ave.
Lot 2, District Lot 983, Range 5, Coast District
Fred and Mamie Kirby family built a house on this property in 1957.
2014 the land was sold and to be developed into multi family units.

It was all wild bush when they came, and they turned it into
beautiful flower gardens, and farm lands.
They had cattle, and were known as breeders of Buff Orpington chickens
Besides cattle they raised Pigs on the farm.
Mar 1927 they had 3 1/2 acres in fruit trees,
besides small fruit and strawberries.
They also had 13 acres planted in clover.

They entered many items in the Fall Fair,
and won many First Prizes.

Miss French taught Music in the area.
1925 she was shown as an
Associate of the London College of Music (A.L.C.M.)

Newspapers report the farm was well populated with children
this season, and a farm truck could be seen in town
loaded with children, so they must have operated
what today we know as a "Summer Camp".
They had a well equipped playground at the farm.
1924 they added several outside bedrooms to their Hill Farm.
They also had a Tennis Court at the farm.
Adults and children spent summers at the farm.

June 1925, they advertized in the newspaper as:

Hill Farm Rest & Holiday Home
Milk, Eggs, Fruit and Vegetables
Tennis- Playground
Entire charge of Children if desired
Mrs. Lanfear, B.A.
Miss French, A.L.C.M.
Terrace BC

Their farm commanded a splendid view of the valley.
They were located on the bench overlooking Terrace and the river.

Plums and Pears grown on this farm,
won a Gold Medal,
presented by Mr. Robert C. W. Lett of the CNR
They had a large orchard on the farm.
And they did all the work, without one man around.

June 20, 1924, the Hon. Thomas Dufferin "Duff" Patullo,
Who later became the 22nd Premier of BC (1933-1941),
visited the Lanfear & French Hill Farm, in Terrace,
the Crescent Hill Farm, at Lakelse Lake,
and the Brightmet Farm, the home of Capt Amesbury.

Mrs. Lanfear and Miss French brought a White Rugosa Rose from England,
which has now naturalized itself to the Terrace Area.
It naturally spreads and is very disease resistant, except for white fly.
The flowers have multiple petals, and are scented.
The leaves are not evergreen.
The White Rose grew on the old Lanfear homestead.
Info on the White Rose above, came via Helene McRae, from Norma Kerby.
Norma's mother, Mamie Kirby, lived on this farm,
until she recently passed away.
Mamie was the daughter of Chris Haugland,
She married Fred Kirby.
The Kirbys were instrumental in forming
The Terrace Regional Historical Society in Terrace.

They were given a farewell dinner at the Knox United Church.
Over 50 people attended to say goodbye to the ladies.
James Kelso Gordon was the Master of Ceremonies
and he spoke highly of the ladies.

Mrs. Lanfear, Margaret, and Miss French left Terrace by train,
to Prince Rupert, Oct 20, 1931,
heading to Vancouver, then back to England,
after 16 years in the area.

After I created this page,
 I found a newspaper article dated May 24, 2006,
where her granddaughter, and namesake,
Danina H. Lanfear, age 65 at that time, visited Terrace from Denmark.
Mamie Kirby showed her a China Cabinet,
the only item left from the original Lanfear Homestead.
Danina said her grandmother's nickname was "Dan"
She supposedly left a bad tempered husband in England,
in 1912, which I am pretty sure should be 1914.
Her grandmother was artistic, and very good at singing.
During the flu epidemic in 1919,
the Terrace Hotel was turned into a hospital,
and these 2 ladies cared for the sick there.
They were also instrumental in raising funds,
and helping soldiers in WWI per other articles.

So now we know a relative existed in 2006,
and I do hope she finds and reads this page.
I would love a picture of her grandmother, Danina Lanfear!
I believe Danina, the granddaughter,
was an English Teacher in Kolding Denmark,
who came from London England originally.
