 and Veterans who Served in
WWI  -  WWII - Korean Wars

In Flanders Fields the Poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though Poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

 Author- John McCrae

 For God and Country

These Gave Their Lives
LEST WE FORGET

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The building and land cost $400.00

Building # 3- After the Second World War,
The old Executive was brought together,
and each gave $100.00 to bid on an old Army building,
which is where the Legion is today.
Members that paid the money:
John Barman, Cece Muhle, Rollie Beecher, Frank Morris,
M. Dubeau Sr. and Jack Kirkaldy
This money bought the building.
George Little owned the 5 lots the building sits on today.
Price negotiated with him, was $1,000.
They sold a bond issue of debentures to finance the rest.

Honourable Mention
Men that served, but not directly from Terrace area,
but ended up here after the War

Major John Percy Eggleshaw
Photo from McRae collection
b- May 16, 1880 in Milltown Ireland
d- Jan 8, 1926 in Hazelton BC, age 44 (looks like 46 to me)
Reg # 1037174
Army, Canadian Infantry
Next of kin his wife- Mrs. Jean Eagleshaw, Carlin BC.
John enlisted July 25, 1916 in Vancouver BC, Farmer
He also served in South Africa, in the Boer War

There is a Bronze Plaque in the Terrace Legion
honouring this man's service.
The plaque says he died Dec 9, 1925?,
which I know is wrong.
He was visiting in Prince Rupert end of Dec 1925!
He presided over a huge banquet in Gordon's Hotel
for returning soldiers, Dec 11, 1925 in Terrace.
They had a huge dedication ceremony May 24, 1927
when they unveiled the plaque in his honour.
Over 60 soldiers from Rupert came on a special train.
Apr 1924- Became a BC Provincial Police Constable in Terrace
He replaced Constable C. A. Mancor.
He was a Constable from Savona BC at that time.

He left in July 1925 to Vancouver to the military hospital there.
So he did have some injuries from War he was dealing with.

His Memorial Service was held on Sunday, Jan 17, 1926 at 11 am,
at the GWVA Hall in Terrace.

He was a member of the Lakelse Lodge I.O.O.F. as well.

His wife left Terrace July 1926 to go to Vancouver,
to set up her business, then she was returning
to her home in Scotland.

N. McMillan succeeded him as Constable in Terrace.

Terrace was also the place men that served here, during WWII,
doing training and manoeuvres,
lost their life due to drowning in the rivers in the area.
One of these accidents has turned into a bit of a mystery.
Private Berger was on the Copper (Zymoetz) river
May 7, 1944.
