 Clifford was an award-winning
Canadian Structural Geologist,
who published many scientific papers,
reports and memoirs in the fields of:
1. Mineralogy
2. Structural Geology
 3. Petrology
4. Stratigraphy

Father- James Robertson Stockwell
b- Sept 4, 1866, in Danville, Richmond, Quebec
d- June 1, 1900, in Estevan, of TB
buried in Estevan City Cemetery
 
Grandfather- John Putnam Stockwell
Grandmother- Lovina Burbank

Mother- Alfretta Susanna (Allie) (Ally) Stockwell, nee Perry,
who James married in 1895,
b- Mar 8,1873, in ON.
d- Aug 1953,
buried in Estevan City Cemetery

Stockwell's had 3 children,
 all born in Estevan SK,:
1. Violet Levina Stockwell,
 b- Feb 29, 1896
d- ?

2. Clifford Howard Stockwell

3. Winnifred Mary Isabell Stockwell
b- Mar 14, 1899
d- ?

After Clifford's father died, his mother Ally
remarried Marshall King.
Mother and 3 children living with him in Estevan in 1911

Most of his career he worked for
the Geological Survey of Canada.

He completed his earliest publication,
 "Galena Hill, Mayo District, Yukon”,
 in 1925 as a graduate student.

other papers and reports that earned him recognition
"The X-ray Study of the Garnet Group" in 1927,
"The Genesis of Pegmatites of Southwest Manitoba" in 1933.
"The Chromite Deposits of the Eastern Townships, Quebec,"
"The Gold Deposits of Herb Lake Area",
and "The Rice Lake-Gold Lake Area",ca 1938-1945, in Manitoba.
1948 in Flin Flon area

In the 1950s he concentrated on Structural Geology-
 the structural controls of mineral deposits

in the 1950's his work divided the Canadian Shield into
3 provinces, Superior, Churchill, and Grenville.
It was later considered to be divided into 5 Provinces.

Produced a Tectonic map of the Canadian Shield.

Wrote Revised Precambrian time scale for the Canadian shield in 1973

Mar 4/5, 1976 they held a Stockwell Symposium in Ottawa
named in his honour.
 

Dr. Stockwell was also an explorer.
 In July/August 1932, he canoed through
 the unexplored region north of Great Slave Lake.

Won many Awards:

  • 1944, awarded the Barlow Memorial Medal
    by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum
     for his paper titled Chromite Deposits of the Eastern Townships, Quebec
  • 1953, awarded the Willet G. Miller Medal by the Royal Society of Canada
  • 1973, awarded the Logan Medal by the Geological Association of Canada
  • 1980, 50 year award from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum
