William Rochester Boiston MBE DSM RN and Edith Boiston (nee Bradford) John was born in Gillingham, Kent (16 Holmside) on 22 March 1920 Third child, and only son of the above couple. Carolyn's mother Dorothy Boiston was John's elder sister.
