Parade in Bienfait, ca 1967?
I know that is my Dad in the Red River Cart
In the background looks like the hall we had our Cub meetings in
corner of Carbon Ave and Main St

Country Guide produced this scrapbook
of farming tips and tricks
in 1942

This Country Guide Magazine
belonged to my Uncle Ed Gesell
it is full of old tricks and tips,
using common materials around the farm
to make just about anything, from next to nothing.

This July 14, 1944
Souris Valley Creamery Receipt
for Cream, is typical of farmers
years ago, selling cream to the Creamery, to make ends meet.
Most of the milk was kept for personal consumption,
and some cream, but any surplus,
was sold for those few extras we received.

Souris Valley Creamery used to deliver milk
door to door in Estevan in 50's and early 60's
The small green plastic coupons were used to
pay for a qt of 2% milk.
Everyone had a milk door on their house
and would leave coupons instead of money
for the milkman.  Imagine doing that today!
The 3 tabs at the bottom are actually Paper Caps
used to seal the glass milk and cream bottles,
used before we got the plastic containers, we use today.
No twist offs or open this end lids here!!

Lightning Adding Machine
Bought by my Dad in 1949, for about $20.00
Before computers and the throw away
calculators, this was a modern convenience.
It actually Added and Subtracted any set of numbers.
A clearing slider bar on the left,
would reset the wheels to zero.
The wheels were turned by the metal stylus.
I used this machine on my math homework
the odd time, but don't tell my teachers!

my Edison Diamond Amberola

actual 1926 ad for this machine

A great source of entertainment
the Edison Diamond Amberola Round Record Player
Give this baby a crank, wind up the spring
and voila, music to the ears!
The horn curves around the back and comes out the front,
unlike the earlier models with the large external horn.

With the good, came the bad,
old Flat Irons heated on the old Kitchen Stove
Now wouldn't that have been fun!
My kids complain when they plugged in the electric one,
with steam attachments, and
setting for linen, cotton etc.

Also before Electricity, Kerosene was the fuel of choice
to operate this old lantern.  My ancestors would have
milked a few cows using this form of lantern
This is a Beacon model, GSW lantern
guaranteed wind proof, made in Canada

McCaskey Cash Register
Fully operational, this register will record sales
of $2.95 max.
It is operated by one large swinging handle
at the front.
By pushing the handle down, this would
raise the appropriate dollar amount in the glass window,
and the cash drawer will then open.
For $1 or $2 purchases a small lever
on the right side would be adjusted.
My dad bought this at auction I believe
but history is unknown.
If anyone recognizes this unit,
please email me with any details.
I believe it to be quite rare,
and haven't seen one like it.
It's history would be a great addition to it.

Nor-West Farmer Newspaper
This is the Mar 21, 1904 Issue
Every farmer in the area would order this paper.
It contained classified ads, for equipment, and animals.
It was produced in Winnipeg, originally once a month,
and then as this issue, every second week.
Some of the old ads and pictures are quite something to see.

Last but not least
A small wall tin clip holder, used by my family
at the old farm south of Bienfait.
In the holder I found 1 piece of notepad left,
and the header is Fred A. Cuddington.
The heading is
left side logo for authorized agent of
The Portage La Prairie Mutual Insurance Co.
Fred A. Cuddington
Box 253, Bienfait Saskatchewan
S0C 0M0
Phone 388-2313
Service with a Smile
Note- Not sure when postal codes came in (70's?)
but this notepad isn't that old,
but a piece of Bienfait memorabilia for sure

from Ingrid Beahm:
Fred sold Insurance but was always the Clerk in the Bienfait Town Office.
They lived up above his brother Art Cuddington's store.
Art lived in the back of his A.H. Cuddington & Sons General Store.
I know Fred & Buss (not sure what her real name was)
lived upstairs because I used to climb those stairs to take piano lessons from their daughter Florence.

I can still picture Fred running the Town Office.  Taxes, Water bills etc...
all done manually and efficiently...and without a helper!
