Price Coal Mine

Very near Hugh Hassard's mine

This mine was operating Sept 6, 1892.
The Price Family came to this area in 1880,
Their Pit mouth was on the side of the hill.
There was 2 drifts, Hassard's and Price.

 By Sept 1892 they had been digging coal for 6-8 years.
This mine and Hugh Hassard's mine
 were 2 of the earliest in this area.

In all the books I have seen,
 it does not list a first name, nor initial.
But a good clue comes from Post Office Records:
From 1890-1893 the Roche Percee Postmaster was
Hilliard Edwin Price,
   b- Mar 26, 1861, Lebanon, St. Clair County, Illinois, USA
   d- Feb 8, 1948 in Calgary, AB

Father- Donald Price,
b- 1828 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mother- Mary Beckton
b- 1832, in Aiman Scotland

Wife- Margaret Gow,
  b- Apr 11, 1870, Bracebridge Ontario
d- June 18, 1951 in Calgary AB
daughter of George Frederick Gow
b- 1836
d- 1911
 and mother- Elizabeth Margaret Ludlow
b- 1833
d- 1897
they had 8 (or possibly 10) children:

Daughter- Elizabeth (Bessie) May Price,
  b- July 10, 1894 at Coalfields SK
d- Feb 1, 1955 in Prince George BC
She married Steve Clare
they had 2 children

Son- Malcolm MacKay "Mack" Price,
  b- Aug 3, 1895 in Williston, ND, USA (Roche Percee SK in another source)
d- May 1, 1948
married Alice nee?
They had one child
Enlisted in WWI, Feb 29, 1916, in Irvine AB
father living in Irvine AB at the time.
shown as a farmer, Reg #696431

  b-July 15, 1898 in Estevan SK
d- Oct 15, 1960 in Medicine Hat, AB
He married Lyda Warren Byers
they had 4 children

She married Norton Emil Rhys
and they had 2 children

Daughter- Zena (Ena) Price,
  b- 1902 in Alberta
(this could be a duplicate name, Edna?)

Daughter- Edna Isobel Price,
  b- Dec 21, 1904 in Alberta
d- May 29, 1991 in Edmonton AB
She married Arthur Benjamin
They had 3 children

Daughter- Millie Price,
  b- 1906 in Alberta
(this could be a duplicate name, Helen?)

daughter- Helen Rose Price
b- Apr 20, 1907, Irvine AB
d- Feb 20, 1992 in Calgary, AB
she married Owen Kenney (1901-1984)
They had 3 children.

Daughter- Elna Alice Price,
  b- Jan 17, 1910 in Alberta
d- Feb 13, 1963 in Vancouver BC
She married Adam Ramsay
And they had a child.

Daughter- Mary Frances Price
b- July 1, 1912 in probably Alberta

She married James Hearn Clarke
they had 3 children

1891 Canada Census- Hilliard was single
Age 28, born in 1863 in USA,
Free Church religion,
living in Broadview Assiniboia.

1901 census shown born Mar 26, 1862 in USA
living in NW Medicine Hat, Assiniboia West (AB)
Occupation shown as restaurant

1906 census, age 41, living in Irving AB
at Section 30, Township 11, Range 3, W4,
Shown immigrated from US in 1867

1911 Census, age 46,
SE Section 26, Township 11, Range 3, W4
Scotch nationality, Anglican religion
Alberta homestead records say
 Section 36, township 11, Range 3, W4

a Mary Price took out a land grant
 SW Section 36, Tsp 1, Rge 6, W2
