Hillside School
Caretakers / Janitors / Maintenance Men

In the Early Years,
Mr. Robert (Bob) Phillips

was the Caretaker at Hillside School.
Robert Phillips was born in 1869,
died Nov 12, 1945
Buried in Estevan City Cemetery
He was a fine Oil Painter and is remembered
for painting a War mural on the walls of the old city hall
Note- A Tale is Told book, says name is Phillips,
Cemetery transcriptions say Phillip.
1911 census says Phillips.
1911 census shows him as a drayman for a General Store.
Listed near P.C. Duncan, so could have been his store.
Wife's name Catherine, both shown 40 years old.
Both born in Edinburgh shire,  Scotland,
and appears they were running a small boarding house.
 

Mr. John (Jack) Robert Murray,
 known as Jack, 

Born in 1890
Died Jan 22, 1958,
Buried in Estevan City Cemetery.

Caretaker at First Hillside School,
 then ECI until October 1957.

 

 Mr. Cecil Lorne Hitchcock

b-Mar 21, 1921- d- Dec 14, 2006

Cecil was the Caretaker at Hillside School
for many years

In 1955 one of the 4 classrooms
was used as Janitor's Quarters

In 1957, with the oil book, the school was too small
and part of the Grade 7 class,
myself included, went to Pleasantdale.

Cecil was School Caretaker
 while I went to school at Hillside.
Cecil kept us all in line!  A great guy!
I remember he also drove the ECI bus.
I remember Mr. Hitchcock in the basement working
on the bathrooms and the old boiler.
Cecil served in World War II in the Canadian Army,
from Sept. 1939 - Feb. 1946
